Upon arriving in Switzerland, many families are surprised to discover that the vaccination system works differently than in other European countries. Here the freedom of choice of the citizen prevails.
Are vaccines mandatory?
No. In Switzerland there are no mandatory vaccinations, neither for children nor for adults. Not even to enter public school. The system relies on families to inform themselves with their pediatrician and decide based on official recommendations.
BAG Recommendations (OFSP)
The Federal Office of Public Health issues a recommended schedule that includes standard vaccines (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, Polio, Measles, etc.). Furthermore, in Switzerland it is especially recommended:
- Tick encephalitis: Very important if you do outdoor activities or in forests.
- Flu and HPV: According to risk groups and age.
Cost and Insurance
The vaccines recommended in the official calendar are covered by basic insurance (LAMal), although they may be subject to the deductible chosen by the insured.
