There is a confusion that is constantly repeated in groups of Spaniards in Switzerland: the idea that, as an EU citizen, you can come to Switzerland, settle and you will look for work and an apartment when you are here. Free movement exists, yes, but it has conditions that the cantonal migration services apply more rigorously than before. Coming without an employment contract and without a confirmed address is, in practice, starting off on the wrong foot. The situation is as follows: if your stay in Switzerland is going to exceed 90 days, you have a legal obligation to register with the municipal registry (Einwohnerkontrolle o contrôle des habitants) within 14 days of your arrival. To do so, you need to present a signed employment contract with an employer domiciled in Switzerland and proof of domicile, which can be a rental contract or a signed declaration from the owner or sublessor. Without these two documents, most municipal offices cannot process your registration, which in turn blocks obtaining a residence permit. What has changed in practice is not so much the law itself, which already required these documents, but the level of control in its application. Some cantons have strengthened procedures, and there have been cases in which people who arrived without a confirmed address found themselves in an irregular situation due to not being able to register. The usual trap is the following: many arrive with a "verbal agreement" with the future employer or with a family member who gives them the address, but without the formalized documents. That's not enough. For those who are already here or are planning the move, the message is simple: before purchasing the ticket, make sure you have both the employment contract and the rental contract or proof of address signed. Cantonal differences exist, especially in terms of deadlines and specific registration forms, but the underlying requirement is the same throughout the country. The SEM (State Secretariat for Migration) publishes all updated information on sem.admin.ch, and the communes generally have an information service for foreign residents. ---
