The accident occurred in the Hauenstein-Ifenthal area during the Conex 26 exercise. The vehicle involved is a GMTF, the armoured personnel carrier of the 20th Infantry Battalion. The military authorities have launched an investigation.

Conex 26 is a large-scale military exercise involving around 3,500 soldiers. Road movements involving heavy vehicles form part of the exercise. Serious accidents are rare. But they do happen.

What this kind of news reminds those of us who arrived here without knowing the system is that, in Switzerland, military service is compulsory for all men with Swiss nationality, including those with dual nationality. It is neither optional nor easily exempted from. If you have children with Swiss passports, this affects them directly.
