Drinking on the street in Switzerland: the problem is not the beer, it's what you leave behind!

This photo is no exception, it's what happens when you confuse "allowed" with "anything goes." In Switzerland you can drink in many public spaces, yes. But that doesn't include turning a lake into an open-air garbage can. And this is where the culture shock comes that many do not want to see.

Because the unwritten rule works better than the law. Nobody is going to say anything to you for having a drink with friends by the lake. But you are expected to leave the site the same or better than you found it. It is not "postcard" civility; it is the minimum for this model to work without massive prohibitions. When that fails, restrictions come, fines... and then the usual complaints.

And the most curious thing: then we are the first to say that Switzerland is clean, that everything works, that it is pleasant. Yes of course. But it's not magic. It's simply that the majority collects their own. When that changes, the system changes too. It's that simple.
